Spike! Reforged
Back when Games Workshop initially created the idea of four Major Tournaments, a trophy was made to go with this event. Fashioned after the iconic trophy in the rule book (and replicated on a miniature available from Games Workshop), this hefty pewter monster was available for winners of the Spike! to pose with. See here Ken Washington posing after his victory in Spike! 2008, the first Spike! run by Thunderbowl. Shortly after we returned the trophy, Games Workshop Canada folded, and the trophy was lost. Many efforts were made to discover where it had gone, many phone calls made and emails sent, but no one could find it.
In subsequent years (Spike!s 2009-2011), we used in its place a resin model made by a local gamer. Despite its being an attractive little model, it was just too small to convey the majesty of this prestigious award. After all, it’s meant to be a gauntlet, and this little resin proxy would not fit even the smallest of Snotling hands. See for yourself, in this picture of last year’s winner, Dave O’Neill.
It has long been a dream of ours to create a new Spike! trophy, one that would remain permanently with us and which would not be lost. This year, with some help from The NAF, we are doing just that.
We found Inspired Bronze, a premium trophy company that was excited to be able to take on a project like this. Armed with the image in the Blood Bowl Rule book, the original GW miniature, and the pewter stand-in we’ve been using, they will make for us a new trophy for this year’s event. They will also be using a picture of the old pewter trophy as a guide. Finally the Spike! tournament will have its trophy back!
